Clarence Tan, Music Director

Singapore-based conductor, Clarence Tan received his formal musical training at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts and later studied conducting with Wang Ya-Hui in Singapore.  He went on to pursue orchestra conducting studying with Imre Pallo, Stephen Mould and Neil McEwan at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, University of Sydney where he was recipient of the Eugene Goossens Scholarship.  Clarence has participated at various international conducting masterclasses studying with Manuel Nawri (Germany), Li Xin Cao (China), Eduardo Diazmuñoz (Mexico), Johannes Fritzsch (Germany), Douglas Bostock (United Kingdom) and Sandro Gorli (Italy) respectively, working with established artists and musicians, discovering fresh insights into established repertoire.  

A versatile conductor, Clarence was appointed assistant to historical performance practitioner Neal Peres da Costa in his opera productions of Gluck's Les Pelerins de la Mecque (2012) and Cimarosa's masterpiece Il Matrimonio Segreto (2013) and has collaborated with composers and artists in various productions in Sydney and Singapore.  In 2014, he directed new works by Quinnuance at the Esplanade and was appointed music director for the Piano Concerto Festival in Singapore accompanying outstanding young pianists performing the works of Mozart, Beethoven and Rachmaninov.  Clarence conducted the world premiere of four commissioned chamber operas by Rita Ueda, Nicole Murphy, Naomi Sekiya and Chen Zhangyi successfully staged by Chamber.Sounds and was appointed music director to Odyssey Dance Theatre's 15th Anniversary production.  2015 sees Clarence collaborating with fellow conductors Terrence Wong and Alicia de Silva in a performance of Applebaum’s Tlön for three conductors without musicians and directing exciting new works by Quinnuance.  He also led the newly formed ADDO Chamber Orchestra in a successful concert performing Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony and Bruch’s Violin Concerto.  Clarence looks forward returning to conduct at the Piano Concerto Festival 2015 with the works of Mozart, Prokofiev and Tchaikovsky.

Clarence is the music director for ADDO Chamber Orchestra and AudioImage Wind Ensemble.  He is also music director for the Singaporean composers collective, Quinnuance and Chamber.Sounds, an artistic collective dedicated to the promotion and performance of music by Singaporeans and composers of the Asia-Pacific region.
